I was lucky enough to be able to spend two weeks in New York over the Summer of 2013, this list based on my experience during my visit in 2013, however the only thing difference should be the addition of a museum at Ground Zero – which was not quite ready when I visited New York.

I found New York one of the most amazing cities in the world, as it truly is the city that never sleeps, the streets are still crazy and busy at 2am.

1. Times square

Times SquareA visit to Times square should be the first thing on your list when visiting the most exciting city in the world! Times Square has lots to offer, you can catch a musical at Broadway or grab some food in one of the many restaurants and cafes, a favourite for Times Square is the famous Hard Rock Café which is overlooking the madness of the area. It will be very busy but you should climb the red steps as the view over Times Square is really wonderful, but be warned even if you go at 2am it will still be busy!

2. The Empire State Building

Empire State Building

The Empire State Building being one of the most famous attractions in the world is another attraction on the list not to miss out on. However, don’t be disheartened by the queues as the long wait to the observation deck is worth the wait – the deck boasts the bests views over the city. And personally going in the evening is better as the city looks wonderful lit up and it adds to the romantic aspect of the city.

3. Central Park

Central Park

Central park is one of those places that you need to see to believe. The park is truly beautiful but to get around it takes a lot of careful planning and consideration as the site covers a lot of ground. I would recommend downloading an app or buying a guide to getting around, or a fun alternative is hiring a bike to go around the park. At all times of year, there are numerous attractions from the zoo, swimming pool, beautiful statues, lakes and in the winter, the famous ice rink.

4. The Highline

Walk along the Highline, this abandoned railway track which spans for one and a half miles, is an elevated walk way which overlooks the city. It is wonderful for an evening walk as it is a little distance from the busy city, but it is still a popular place for locals to hang out and meet with friends. There is a seating area to overlook the busy streets and to marvel at the hundreds of yellow taxi cabs going past.

5. The Status of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty Is practically invisible from the city; however, you can catch the boat over to the island which hosts the statue. The boat ride is wonderful as it gives you a chance to see the statue up close and to see the Manhattan skyline. Whilst on liberty island, you can climb the statue of liberty and they have audio guides which give you an exciting, extensive insight into the history of the statue.

6. The Natural History Museum

Natural History Museum - New York

To visit the Natural History Museum, I would recommend at least putting a side one day to visit the museum, as honestly a week wouldn’t be enough to see all of the wonders of the museum. The building is huge, so it would be best to do some research into the areas that would interest you the most, to not miss out on anything. The dinosaur collection is wonderful and really unique, but very busy. But the whole museum attracts large crowds due to the fact that it is free and one of the best museums in the world.

7. Grand central terminal

Grand Central

Grand central terminal is the busiest train station in America, is a beautiful attraction. Not only is it a train station, but they have beautiful restaurants and a wonderful market to buy fresh products.

8. Ground Zero

Whilst in the city, a visit to Ground Zero reminds visitors to remember the atrocities that occurred on 9/11, the stunning memorial which now includes a museum is a beautiful location to commemorate the victims of 9/11. The memorial is touching as the two water fountains in the centre represent the size of the two towers, whilst giving an insight into how the buildings looked.

9. Brooklyn Bridge

The famous Brooklyn bridge is worth a visit as it connects the cities of Brooklyn and Manhattan, and along with that it is one of the oldest bridges of its kind in the United States. The bridge represents 150 years of history and walking along the river and under the bridge gives beautiful views of both Brooklyn and Manhattan.

10. City Boat Tour

Boat Tour

As I have previously mentioned, the views of the city of Manhattan are wonderful. As previously mentioned one way to view the city is from the top of the Empire State building, but another great way is by taking a boat tour around the city. There are numerous boat services that run throughout the day and evening to give you a look at the city skyline. There are different boat trips to cater for all types of visitors, for example there are boat tours with meals, music, guides or simply just to admire the views.
